INSTITUTE_location2_2013The people of the Alisal community are warm and welcoming. Local activists, artists, and educators are doing inspiring and lasting work increasing access to educational programs, health care and legal support, as well as the arts and cultural programming. The Alisal Center for the Fine Arts (ACFA) is right in the heart of the neighborhood where locals of all ages can attend drama, dance, and visual arts classes for free. Organizations that work out of ACFA’s facilities include HIJOS DEL SOL, a visual arts organization, and TEATRO ALISAL, a documentary-style performance group for young people.

The Alisal Family Resource Center (AFRC) is a place where the community’s families can gather for various services including adult classes and after-school programs for kids. Alisal High School is always bustling with activities after school and during the summer. There’s a history of local story telling through theater at Everett Alvarez High School and through a performance collective called Batun 12. The Cesar Chavez branch of the Salinas Public Library has just reopened after an extensive renovation and is once again serving adults, teens, and kids in ways beyond an average library. All this is to say, the community we’re working with is rich and generous. It is an ideal place for our community-engaged work.
