Home Microphone & Creative Workers Rising
After almost a year of grassroots organizing and coalition building, we co-hosted Creative Workers Rising in partnership with the Arts & Culture Coalition of Altadena. Yesterday was a remarkable day; over 500 people participated in workshops, distributed resources, gathered around story, music, and every kind of creative practice -- all in service to caring for creative workers impacted by the Eaton Fire. Almost 60 organizations took part, Side Street Projects hosted "The People's Free Store," and Home of Kings and Queens set up a free farmers market.
At the center of the day long event was "Home Microphone" -- a pop up stage curated and produced in collaboration with Juila Grob and Khalil Almustafa. The stage hosted performances from 7 year olds and 70 year olds, it held a space for wild comedy, gorgeous improvisation, collective joy, and shared mourning. We'll be holding that space for years to come as we continue asking how the arts, and theater in particular can take part in long-term, equitable recovery from disaster.
