Remembering Kerry English

We are heartbroken at the passing of friend and former board member Dr. Kerry English.

A pediatrician in South Los Angeles for forty years, Kerry made almost a second career of going to the theater. Not just going to the theater, but going to the theater every night, and going to every theater, and every kind of theater.

Kerry had an open-hearted love for people (and sometimes puppets) telling stories on stage. He arrived early to chat in the lobby, and faithfully attended galas and served on boards to support the work of his favorite companies.

Cornerstone was lucky to be one of those favorite companies, and it was a delight to look up from our improvised box office in a rec center, church, park, or school, and see the trim white beard and flashing smile that signaled Kerry English had made it to the show.  Some of those schools and parks were far from Los Angeles, too. Kerry turned up at most of the California: The Tempest tour sites, and even popped in to visit us at Queens College in New York.

Kerry was often accompanied by his great love, Olga Garay-English, and they made a stylish and effervescent couple, always full of joy and deeply invested in the people who make theatre and the people they serve.

We will very much miss him.
