Hunger Stories

By Karla

I have been a vegetarian for seven years, but I grew up eating meat of all kinds. That was the food that fed my hunger as a child and reminded me of home. Fast food was also a fast way for my parents to satisfy my hunger. Now as a 20 something year old i am Looking for foods that have nothing to do with a cow, a pig, a fish, a chicken or chicken nugget! to feed my hunger. That journey of looking for what to me is a better option feeds the hunger that i have. What will i discover next to eat that has nothing to do with these animals? animals i used to play with as a child. What brand new item will i find in the store that tastes good?  Those thoughts feed my hunger. The chicken, the turkey, the pig, the cow, all of these animal’s in some small way remind me of my growing up. Not just something i would see on my plate, but something i would play with. Now, No meat of any animal for this girl, and the only reason im not a vegan is not that it would be difficult for me, but i don’t want to be the difficult person who cant order much when she goes out to eat. I’m not against people eating meat, i think people should eat whatever they want. Most of the time its fast food, because its so easy to get to and so so cheap! but that’s a whole other issue. I just think if one is going to eat meat of cows, chickens, pigs, etc… you should know where those animals are coming from, how they live and are treated. What they are being fed. I think its important to know where your food is coming from and how its being treated. I don’t say i am a vegetarian off the bat when i am out with someone. It kind of reveals it self. People start to see that i order certain things and for the most part try to keep the food i eat healthy. I hear family and friends always saying but don’t you crave meat? don’t you get board of eating just salads? which is funny because i don’t really eat salads… and funny because my family also says the day you have a baby that baby is going to be born green! Now a days the most satisfying meal to me again, reminds me of home, minus the side of chicken or meat, its a simple plate of beans and rice with a side of platanos fritos!yum.
