2018 Institute: Meet the Players: Kayla Rivera
This summer we traveled to the other side of the country to make a new play called, The Cardinal with and about the people of Queens New York, the most ethnically diverse urban area in the world. The production is part of Cornerstone’s Institute Summer Residency, which has brought together thirteen participants (“the players”) from across the United States and Canada to live, learn, and create together. In one month’s time, and working alongside Cornerstone staff, Ensemble and community members, these creative souls are learning Cornerstone’s process for creating community-engaged theater. By participating in classes, workshops, and taking part in every aspect of the play-making process from casting, auditions, rehearsals, costume/design build, and acting. This blog series is an opportunity for you to “Meet the Players”!
Kayla Rivera AKA Rosalba
A Little Bit about Kayla
“Hi, my name is Kayla Rivera and I am 20 years old. I’m a proud member of the LGBT+ community, and I love to express myself through theater and improv. I’m very excited to bring this community piece to life both as a collaborator, and as a born and raised Queens native.”
What inspired you to join Cornerstone’s Institute Summer Residency this year?
“I wanted to join the Institute Summer Residency to have a chance to see my home in a way I haven’t before.”
What has been your favorite moment thus far?
“I’ve loved hearing the different stories of people who occupy the same space as I do, yet whom I never interact with. One of the story circles I liked in particular was the one with the students from College Now. Their stories echoed mine only a few years ago and even still now.”
What do you hope to learn from your experience this summer?
“I’m hoping I can learn to find new connections between communities, especially in Queens.”
Complete this sentence. Queens is….
“…my home.”
Why do you think people should come and see The Cardinal?
“To learn more about Queens. All the things I love and hate about it make it my home, and I’m so excited to be a part of a play that will show a bit of what Queens has to offer.”
The Cardinal performs August 10 & 11th. CLICK HERE to purchase tickets today!
