OFF TO GUATEMALA!
January 2014 – We are currently in Guatemala City for a 4-week cultural exchange with the Guatemalan theater company iiK’. IiK’ is an ensemble of professional artists that was initiated by a group of graduates from the University of San Carlos de Guatemala, and includes members from the National School of Drama and The Academy of Performing Arts.
Since our inception in 2007, I have worked with TJSF to unite immigrant populations from different parts of South and Central America through a shared theatrical experience, often struggling with the cultural divides felt between these populations. Through this collaboration, iiK’ and TJSF will collect the narratives of the community and weave together a play to be performed at the end of the exchange.
Last November, iiK’ started engaging community partners to reach at least 12 community program participants to take part in the exchange. We’ve also been sharing our ideas through weekly Skype meetings that have also served as planning and coordination sessions.
We are thrilled about this collaboration and look forward to sharing more updates and photos about this exciting project on our blog!
