Talk It Out

In 2011, Cornerstone Theater Company and The California Endowment developed Talk It Out, a program about change inspired by real stories from community members across California. Their stories are created in to original, short plays and are performed by community members, along with professional actors. Each staged reading is accompanied by a facilitated discussion with the audience about efforts by community to make change.

The first Talk it Out program focused on A Community Conversation To Fix School Discipline in response to questions from the community regarding school discipline policies in their neighborhoods. More recently, Talk It Out expanded its scope to look at the root causes of behavioral issues in school, such as childhood adversity. The focus of these programs was to raise awareness and personalize the discussion of school discipline and childhood adversity for people on all sides of the conversation.

In 2016, Talk it Out began to explore the school-to-prison pipeline with the creation of Talk It Out: A conversation about Reentry, Redemption, Renewal. This program was developed in response to questions from community regarding Proposition 47, anti-recidivism and the inclusion and rehabilitation of individuals marginalized by crime, poverty and violence. Talk It Out strives to raise awareness and personalize the discussion around the commitment to improve reentry outcomes for formerly incarcerated individuals through policy reform by offering community members a chance to share first–person experiences, to ask questions and to explore possible solutions from people on all sides of the conversation.
