2010 Institute Summer Residency in Pacoima

Pacoima Hey! - July 1 - August 1, 2010pacoima citysign

We’re proud to announce that Cornerstone’s 2010 Institute Summer Residency will take place in Pacoima, a neighborhood in the City of Los Angeles.  This is particularly exciting for us because it is a return of sorts.  In 1993, Cornerstone had only been in Los Angeles for less than two years when we collaborated with residents in Pacoima to produce our second Los Angeles community production: a new play called Rushing Waters, written by Migdalia Cruz and directed by Bill Rauch. The play was performed at The Boys and Girls Club of San Fernando and featured a cast of 45 actors and musicians.

17 years later, Cornerstone is working with the Boys & Girls Club again, as well as other amazing organizations serving Pacoima like Youth Speak! Collective and it's community garden program, Project Youth Green, to create another new play:

itsallbueno-cardIt's All Bueno

Written by Sigrid Gilmer

Directed by Juliette Carrillo

Created in collaboration with the people of Pacoima, a neighborhood in the northeast San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, California.

Baron and Esther have lost their house.  Dreamer knows Pacoima is all good.  Low knows Pacoima is all bad. Candy? He isn’t sure.  This Pacoima tale of optimism follows the journey of a family confronted with the community they cannot run away from. Through a madcap adventure with dueling car washes, a mean ole scary bus stop, and a street vendor with stories to tell, they discover that there is no place like home. Every community has troubles and treasures. Dig deeper - you’ll see It’s All Bueno.

This play is created in collaboration with Project Youth Green, Youth Speak Collective, Maclay Community Center, Boys and Girls Club of San Fernando Valley, Discovery Charter Preparatory School, First United Methodist Church of Pacoima & Project GRAD of Los Angeles.

About Pacoima

Pacoima is a multi-cultural, working class neighborhood located in the northeast San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, California.  Adjacent to the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains and nestled between 3 freeways, Pacoima is about 7 square miles with a population of approximately 80,000. That population includes many families and a lot kids.  Even with youth-focused organizations offering resources, gang involvement, violence, and a high drop-out rate are some of the challenges local kids and their families face.  Pacoima has industrial and residential properties mixed together which leads to a number of environmental and health challenges for the residents.  There is a strong force of civic pride in Pacoima.  People work hard and the community cares deeply for its youth.  Residents are largely bi-lingual with some monolingual Spanish speakers as well.
